My child is thriving. He has a good rapport with his support worker. He sees him as his buddy
Since August 2012, Autism Jersey has provided Short Break Services, supporting children and adults who are on the autism spectrum, with the youngest being four years old and the oldest in their late 30s. We assist with life skills such as cooking and cleaning to help people live independently and we accompany them on activities like bowling and swimming and going out on excursions, such as with Wetwheels Jersey.
As of the end of 2016, we support 36 individuals and deliver a minimum of 250 hours of support per week. This is expected to keep growing.
Autism Jersey has well-developed expertise in its field and has achieved Preferred Provider status in the provision of autism-related services to the Department of Health and Social Services. In 2014 our services were accredited by the National Autistic Society’s Autism Accreditation Programme. The organisation will undergo a further Autism Accreditation review in 2017.
Autism Jersey staff have specialist training in autism as well as expertise in managing behaviours that challenge. They are also trained in first aid, manual handling and safeguarding.
We are fully insured.
Here’s what our members say about the difference that the SBS team makes to them:
‘Doing homework with his support worker reduces the pressure on the family’
‘It probably saved our family, our marriage, our everything’
‘I can rely on them. I know I can do something on a Saturday, even if it is simply going for a quick pub lunch with my husband’
‘It means I can even have a shower uninterrupted’
The team is headed by Laura Kerr, Short Break Services Manager.
